Happy Earth day shoejunkies. So it's earth day let's talk about Earth Shoes. Growing up in the 70s, the earth shoe was everywhere. They were as widespread as the AMC Pacer, bell-bottoms or disco and just as iconic.

The technology for earth shoes were invented by Anne Kalso a danish Yoga instructor/costume designer. While on a trip to Brazil she noticed the posture of the indigenous people as they walked bare foot in the sand. Their heels were lower than their toes and influenced the cutting edge technology she developed over the next decade.

She opened her first store in Copenhagen in 68. But it didn't make it to the states until 1970 when a chance meeting in 69 between Kalso and Americans Raymond and Eleanor Jacobs while vacationing in Europe. They loved the comfort and secured the distribution rights for the US. and the rest is history. The secret to the shoe was the Kalso Minus Heel (now called Negative Heel® Technology) that mimicked yoga's mountain pose. Great for posture. And now they are reissuing a lot of the original styles.

I just discovered Minna Parikka shoes. I must say, THEY ROCK!!! They are slightly naughty and very classic with a hint of glamour. Let's check the Ava. OMG. When I changed shoes I felt the difference My feet wanted the pillow softness of the inner sole. They are so soft they don't have the new shoe pinch we all know. Okay Shoejunkies. Something crazy just happened.

My man Ron and I are walking to get a cool drink before heading in to the library. When on Saratoga and Sharp streets, what do I see? A pair of lizard square heeled mules on the sidewalk. Placed ever so carefully in the center of the corner square. The shoe gods said "let there be shoes" and angels swooped down in stilettos and placed these shoes 20ft in front of me. They are toffee colored square toed stacked heel BeBe mules. Ultra classic and ultra chic. All I could think was how awesome they would look with some long dress slacks or flared stiff jeans. Sometimes serendipity steps in and fabulous shoes step out. Before I wear them I WILL tea tree oil the hell out of them. Anyone out there had fate drop a pair of shoes in your lap? Tips for Fabulous Feet: Bacteria Banishment

One of the worst things about shoes is odor. It can be at the least annoying and embarrassing. And at most a foot health hazard. There are many products on the market for just this reason. But keep in mind. Bacteria and fungi grow in moist dark environments. Just covering up the problem does not no good. We want to kill the germs that cause the odor not just cover it up. A few preventive measures for foot/shoe care that can banish the bacteria and fungi in turn extending the life of your shoes.

WASH YOUR FEET. This may sound obvious but it may take 2 to 3 times a day. In heels. athletic shoes, and flip flops. The sweat and dirt build up. Find good brushes and volcanic stones to really keep them clean and dry. And get in between those toes.

Tea tree oil , lemongrass oil, lavender oil diluted in olive oil directly on to feet are great at killing odor causing germs and not toxic when used topically. I mix a few parts with olive oil before bed time and wake up with soft germ free feet.

Soak feet once a week. to keep callouses and dead skin at a minimum. Germs love dead skin cells. yum yum yum. Epsom salt is great but, maybe baking soda as a deodorizer with a few drops of lavender oil. Still keep the pampering part alive.

Runners and athletes, take out those inner soles and let them dry completely before using them again. You should let them dry in the sun (if you can) since sunlight kills them. Wear cotton socks. A little cornstarch or talc in your socks helps as well to keep moisture at a minimum.

Some Products:

Rockport Washable - machine washable casual leather shoes. This will help keep down bacteria inside and out. Awesome styling too. I first got wind of these at Shoe Smitten.

Copper Sole Socks - there are a few different brands of these. The claim to kill 99.9% of bacteria and fungi associated with foot oder and other foot complications. They also come in athletic and dress styles. For more info check out Cupron . Insoles are also available.

Lavilin Foot Deodorant Cream - It has no aluminum or other synthesized chemicals, this is a green product. It claims one dosed a day works for multiple days. Check the customer reviews@Amazon.

There's a bumper crop of "inspired by" shoes this season. So if you want the look and don't have $700-$3000 to drop on your fabulous peds, this is your year. I'm excited by so many trends, it's hard to start. So I narrowed it for this installment to what I call The Love Knots (ruched knots.)

The inspiration:

Last season's
Christian Laboutin's Madeline Satin Platform Mules and
Knotted Open-Toe Sandal (pump).

Both have a gorgeous shape, amazing quality, detail, and the ruching cascades down the sides like chocolate luxury. I digress, at $850 and $865 respectively. If you can work it, than by all means do. And since this classic was last season , it may be harder to find.

Another label that's got flavor this season is Marni. They have this cartoony silhouette and I'm in love. Check out this one for starters. Tips for Fabulous Feet: Fall Foot Care

Well Shoejunkies, change of season means time to reassess the condition of our feet.

Got to busy and missed a few pedicures?
Have we adequately exfoliated?
Any new or old callouses?

Before we isolate our feet from the world for the season, we should ask ourselves these and other questions. Let's be sure our feet are in the best possible condition for new shoes. Problems don't disappear just because they are covered. On the contrary, closing up our feet in dark, moist, hot places (fabulous shoes) can be worse for our skin than sandals. You know bacteria and fungi LOVE this environment. So here are a few tips.

Take an honest look at your feet. The questions above are a good start for checking overall health. If you have symptoms of athlete's foot. Take care of it immediately. It can spread to toenails, an even harder place to get rid. And who wants that?

Check that your arches are still strong. I found an awesome video by Gary Moller with a quick and simple exercise you can do to avoid, back pain, shin splints, knee pain, hip pain and all other related problems (If that's not reason enough) by keeping your arches strong. High heels can do a lot of damage. But we still love em'. So do it.

Along with the questions above, ask also about your age. I know you never ask a woman her age. But our feet do expand as we age. Many foot problems stem from ill-fitting shoes. So get your feet sized at the beginning each season. Remember, feet expand during the course of a day. So wait until the afternoon to go on that shoe excursion. You'll get a more correct fit. You don't want to add to aging with a bouncing baby hammer toe or bunion.

Hope this helps. If you are honest with yourself and resolve your problems head on, your feet will thank you. Now on to those Shoes Fabulous Shoes!!!

I know this one isn't breaking any rules. But sometimes, fellow Shoejunkies, you have to go with understatement. Sometimes the rebellion is in the way you say it. Valentino-Patent Mary Jane says it graphically instead of with splashy tones. Seems like Valentino wanted to keep in mind that you'll be wearing more than just shoes. I know it's hard to silence that inner magpie, but this two toned black and tan patent is classic and will work with so many timeless looks. From the 20s to the 80s, menswear to dresses, just name the trend, it fits.

Designer Spotlight: Carlos By Carlos Santana

Hey Shoejunkies! As I sail the virtual sea, aka' web shopping, my adventure never ceases to amaze. We all know the link between music and fashion. So when I came across Carlos By Carlos Santana for the 1st time, a bell when off in my head. No, I wasn't crazy, but the logo made me think. I this 'the Carlos Santana'? You know the Latin Rock, Jazz, Blues fusion pioneer with hits like Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, and Oye Como Va. Or the veteran artist in 2000 who swept the Grammies for hit collabs on his album Supernatural with Smooth feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 and Maria Maria feat. the R&B duo The Product G&B. There's a guitar in the logo and that is definitely his name. Hmm???

Upon deeper inquiry, I discover it is 'the Carlos Santana'!!! I'm floored. No matter what search I do @ Shoes.com or let's say Zappos, his looks keep coming up. And I consistently love the designs. So how do you go from the first artist to have a #1 hit in two different centuries, to adorning women's feet with some of the most fashion forward designs?

Well lets look closer. He started the shoe company, with his wife Deborah around 2000. It donates part of the proceeds to their, The Milagro (miracle) Foundation, a charitable organization that makes grants to community based organizations around the world working with children in the areas of the arts, education and health.

This changes everything. Not only does the company design for women like me, to quote the website,

Hope everybody had a good 4th of July. It's the heat of summer, so now we look toward fall. Cool breezes, leaves crunching at our feet and chilly temps jacket weather. I can just taste the air. May of the trends for fall are similar to summer in the jewel tones, light fabrics, and layering. The shoe reflect that very feminine sentiment, along with edgy shapes, and classic design.

So with change of season comes change. A new addition to features with all the faves. Designer Spotlight covers the people behind innovation and creativity.
